Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures – Dental Veneers

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Part two in our continuing series on cosmetic dentistry procedures is about dental veneers. Dental veneers are custom made thin shells of ceramic material that are applied to front of one’s teeth. These veneers are used to improve the appearance of teeth and to protect them. They can correct problems such as tooth cracks and chips, worn tooth enamel, uneven smiles (tooth alignment), spacing and staining. Veneers are often referred to as instant orthodontics.

Porcelain veneers and composite resin veneers are the two known types of veneers. Porcelain veneers are more expensive but they last longer than composite resin. Porcelain veneers can cost up to $2600 and they can last for more than 15 years. Composite resin will cost up to $1400 and can a lifespan of five to seven years.

The placement of porcelain veneers usually take place over a period of two months with several dental visits. In the first step, one must a through examination done by a Miami dentist. This examination includes a smile design (makeover) consultation in which the dentist will explain to the patient how they will create a new smile for them. The cosmetic dentist may also show a computer generated image of what the patient might look like after he is done. In the next step, the Miami cosmetic dentist must remove enamel from every tooth getting a veneer. The amount of enamel removed is about 0.3 – 0.7 millimeters (the thinkness of egg shell or fingernail). In other step, the dentist must make an impression of the patient’s teeth.  This mold of teeth is then sent to a dental laboratory where a lab technician uses them to create the custom veneers.

In the next appointment, the dentist make sure the veneers are the right fit and color for the patient. If they are not, other sets of veneers will be made until the right look and fit is found.  Next, the cosmetic dentist will bond the porcelain veneers to the patient’s teeth.

Finding a Miami Cosmetic Dentist

Friday, July 18th, 2008

In order to find a qualified and experienced Miami Cosmetic Dentist, you should take the time to do research and educate yourself. We will help you with this process by providing you with as much Miami cosmetic dentistry information as possible.

One of the first things you should do is obtain a recommendation from your regular dentist. If your Miami dentist finds that you need additional evaluation prior to cosmetic surgery, he will send you to an orthodontist, oral maxillofacial surgeon, prosthodontist, endodontist or periodontist.

Question your family, friends and coworkers who have had any cosmetic dentistry work such as smile makeovers done. A smile makeover utilizes different dentistry procedures like dental veneers, dental crowns and tooth whitening to improve the appearance of your smile.

Before you meet with a Florida cosmetic dentist, you should check their credentials and years of experience. You should make sure that the dentist is apart of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and other similar organizations.

During your consultation with the dentist, you should be asking the following questions:

• How many years has the dentist been practicing?
• What is the dentist’s expertise in general dentistry, full mouth reconstruction and cosmetic dentistry?
• Does the dentist own the practice or is just employed there? This is important because an owner/partner in a practice will have an incentive to do good work.
• Ask to view before and after pictures of the dentist’s previous patients? Make sure you like what you see.

Cosmetic dentistry can improve and change the quality of your life immensely. One’s smile can have a major effect on their self-esteem and confidence. For those of you who have been dealing with these emotional issues, it can be a sigh of relief.

In order to meet all of the cosmetic dentists in the Miami area, please check this site as often as possible. Stay tuned as we will be posting information, news and technology about Miami Cosmetic Dentistry.
